In the game, the user can pull civilians into a web-bridge to be saved from falling to their death, and the user can draw in the black suit and become the New Goblin. The game's combat is also similar to that of Spider-Man 2, with the user starting with a single punch attack, and progressively learning more powerful attacks. The user can also climb walls, jump between buildings, and swing from poles. The game is also similar to Ultimate Spider-Man, in that it features various webbing mechanics, such as web-slinging and a grapple system.
Spider-Man 3s gameplay is based on the previous Spider-Man games, including the swinging, web-slinging and combat abilities of Spider-Man. For the first time in a Spider-Man video game, the city is featured in a 3D environment. Various Marvel Comics characters such as X-Men Magneto, Wolverine, and Spider-Man enemies Doctor Octopus and Sandman can be seen hanging out together in the game. The game features a number of cameos, with several famous Marvel Comics creators and actors as guest characters, including Stan Lee, Walt Simonson, Mark Millar, James Keach, and Todd McFarlane. Octopus is featured as a boss battle for the first time, and is voiced by actor Jim Meskimen, who also plays the role of the President of the United States in the game. Spider-Man is still voiced by his character actor from Spider-Man 2, Yuri Lowenthal, and still portrayed by the actor who played him in Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker. The game's story includes a villain in the form of the supervillain Electro, who is based on the creation of the game's art director, Shawn Lee. The game features a number of spider-themed missions for completion by the player. The game's open world (similar to that of Spider-Man 2) consists of a version of New York in the comics, and features a more diverse cast of characters than the films.
